David I assume you are running some version of the dreaded windows :-)) Can I suggest you do what I have just done in a similar position.......Insert a Linux "Live" CD (this is one that will run using only memory and taking the system from the Cd without touching the HD) You need to set the bios to boot from CD and you will find you can access the folders and files. Linux will read all windows file systems. You can then trannsfer the files onto a USB memory stick or external drive. It is a bit slower that normal because quite a lot of memory will be being used by the system and is not available for caching the copy process.
As many Linux adherents say "the best tool to sort out messed up Windows systems is Linux!!" ....BTW I uses Unbuntu 9.10 the latest release, and readily available.
