here in the US, it's significantly cheaper to ship them in from China than
to buy from a "local" source."

I've noticed one U.S. seller on Ebay that has tested Thunderbolts with
switching
power supplies for about the same price (less than some) as the Chinese
sellers.
Might be worth looking into for 3 day instead of 2-3 week shipping.
