Hi I suspect it's a bit early to really know what the wear out mechanisms really are (if any). Conventional gas cells have a finite lifetime on the lamp. For what ever reason, most fail for something other than lamp wear out. I've had one come in dead with a blown (literally exploded) cap on the main board.

They could gain valuable experience from this list. :-) As to the cmos square wave, thats really the most reasonable issue to solve. Low pass filter gain 10 mc xtal more gain.... Or lock a 10 MC sine osc to it. Suspect there are many ways that reasonably deal with it. When they ship several units to me for testing I will get right on that project. I just hope I can still solder at that date. XXX curious about the method of suspension in the cell. Might the laser light bouncing around ultimately deteriorate the stuff causing it to fail?
