Hi Robert,

The blue wires seem to be a low current source.  In my test, they were pulled 
down to almost nothing.  There is not much difference in the unloaded voltage 
between the red and blue wires.  OTOH, this is beginning to make some sense.  
They use a center tapped supply for the +5V.  That gives lots of headroom with 
a supply of ~10V.  Then, they use a TO-3 case 5V regulator to power the chips 
on the board.  There are 62 chips, for a probable current load of about 1.85 
amps.  A 5 volt drop at 1.85 amps is 9.25 watts to waste.  I'm looking at an 8 
volt drop at 1 amp, for about 8 watts of waste heat.  So, I'll be asking a bit 
less of the heat sink than HP did in the original circuit.  I'll look at a TO-3 
cased regulator a bit more.  But that switcher that Don posted is awfully 
attractive.
