Interesting factoid. There is a WWII vintage quartz mine about 3 miles from where I live up here in the Tellico mountains in TN. They cut into solid rock about 25 feet and then went straight down with a shaft about 15 ft in diameter. Unfortunately when the mine played out, they filled it in, all but the entrance. Some of the quartz still visible is beautiful.
