This. always use 485/422 drivers (2 pairs, one in each direction) + 1 pair for VCC + 1 pair for GND in a CAT-5 cable. If you are carefull you can choose the pinout in a way that if someone plugs it into an ethernet port it won´t blow anything. The limit becomes the power, because the 485 can drive >1200 meter cable if you use a good tranceiver (i´ve tried 600m, it works flawlessy).
