I think things are more powerful than you think. For example, check out a PIC16F18313, 8 pin SOIC-8. 6 I-O pins, mappable through a pin-mux. Includes ADC, DAC, 3 Timers, UART, I2C, SPI, 2 blocks of user configurable logic, and an on board CPU master clock good to 1 % over temp and voltage. $0.75 in quantity 1 ! So, all of that for less than a 555 timer IC.
