Hello, I tried that and ntpd would simply refuse to run on a virtual linux host under vmware server.
Like others have already said, it doesn't work. For virtual machines other than vmware, the same principles should apply : I did some reading to find out I had to install vmware-toolbox on the linux virtual hosts and set it so vmware synchronize the virtual host clock with the guest operating system time. This is the recommended way to do this, at least with vmware. No time server or time client at all used on the virtual hosts. You just let vmware synchronize the clock in your virtual hosts (same if virtual host runs Windows OS). Running ntpdate on the virtual hosts would eventually cause vmware-rtc to quit working so do not use time setting software at all in vmware hosts, period. I hear some virtulisation solutions can make a pseudo-clock available to ntpd so it can be used in a vm but I have never used these products. It surely doesn't work under vmware server as far as I can tell.
