Just a little explanation on this since usenet.net.nz is run by me.

What happened is that around [1] the 23rd the server that was the home
for usenet.net.nz died [2] . The problem was that the primary DNS for
usenet.net.nz was on the machine, the secondary DNS was behind the machine
and the other two DNS servers had recently changed hands and were no
longer slaving for the domain.

Unfortunately I was traveling overseas at the time and was not using the
Internet very much so didn't realise anything had happened. My provider
tried to contact me but sent a TXT message to my cellphone which did not
reach me [3].

By the time I found at a few days afterwards Ask had updated the name
server lists. [4]

An interesting side affect was that my provider and the people listed as
secondary DNS hosts got DOSed by DNS queries for "usenet.net.nz" going to
the various name servers for the domain. According to one of them they were
receiving over 4500 queries/second.

My apologies to people on the project (especially Ask) for the problems
caused by the outage.

Simon.

[1] - I have not gone though logs yet so times are approx
[2] - power/ motherboard gone I think, it doesn't power up anymore.
[3] - I had to use a different phone on holiday and while voice calls
forwarded from my home number, TXT messages did not.
[4] - I had some people at home who could have got the server back online
but decided at that point urgency was no longer required.
