Hi, all;

Yesterday I received approval to run a stratum-1 server at my school.
If all goes well, I will have a static IP address, a very high-bandwidth
and reasonably low-latency network connection, and a place to house the
equipment.

The problem is that the building does not have any windows that can
open, and thus at best the GPS will be able to see slightly less than
half of the sky. However, I was offered the opportunity to put the GPS
puck on the roof and run a wire down an existing conduit to the top
floor of the building. That sounds like the way to go, considering that
the distance is not all that big: maybe 10-15 feet at most.

Since I have a Garmin GPS 18, I have six wires to worry about. Right
now I am thinking of getting a CAT5 cable of a suitable distance and
wiring the GPS to it.

Can anyone estimate the longest length of CAT5 (with amateurish
connections) that will reliably work?

Additionally, should I worry about setting a PPS offset on the PC to
which the GPS is connected based on the distance of the cable?
