I am running a plain Linux system (2 GHz P4) on a Basic ADSL line (6
Mbit/768 kbit) with an old Thomson Speedtouch 510 modem that still can
use JP's "SIP Spoof" method of transparent PPPoA to ethernet bridging.
No NAT.
The spikes have never caused me any problem. I have gkrellm running and
sometimes I note the increased traffic, but it does not slowdown my
system or cause any problems with Internet.

Of course those 510s are no longer sold, and the new SpeedTouches are trash.
