there are many places, mine for one which is considered the lightning capital
of the world, that spike and static suppression would be almost mandatory
when the unit is placed outside to protect the computer equipment.. i called
both garmin and apc and can get no answers from any of them :(

i was looking at the apc gigabit ethernet protector to plug the garmin cable
into and then extend out to my breakout mechanism, but i am concerned about
what the suppressor components may do to the pulse output of the garmin gps18
lvc.

does anyone have any experience with suppression for gps? the unit i have in
mind is

http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=PNET1GB&tab=models

im afraid that the pulse rise time accuracy of gigabit ethernet is 1ms or
greater in which case, feeding this thing a microsecond accuracy pulse may
cause the pulse to go haywire, either horizontally or skewed vertically.

"...and the hordes of M$*ft users descended upon me in their anger,
and asked 'Why do you not get the viruses or the BlueScreensOfDeath
or insecure system troubles and slowness or pay through the nose
for an OS as *we* do?!!', and I answered...'I use Linux'. "
