Actually, I've applied for a vendor name in the past - I think Ask might have 
been busy at the time because I never received a response (and my anti-spam is 
very liberal - nothing is nuked unless it's 99.9999% spam). Perhaps these 
vendors did not receive a response in whatever time interval they consider 
"reasonable" (an hour?) so just went with the pool.

I should note that I don't blame Ask at all, the work he does is excellent.

Also I thought the request not to use the pool directly was for IP addresses - 
using the DNS names was OK?

There is a document about this on the pool website, but is there a list 
of vendors that
actually applied for a vendor pool name?  Whenever I see a device or OS 
that uses the
pool, it always uses the generic names just like your phone.
