For me, classical strings have been the hardest to render using the
free soundfonts available. High quality Open Source string fonts
don't seem to exist. But now I have discovered a soundfont
package that does give good results. Any users of Timidity who
render classical music such as symphonies or string quartets
should try this collection called Sinfonia 36:

Although the strings are quite passable, the woodwinds in this
collection are not as good and I would recommend using fonts
from other collections for oboe, clarinet, etc.

If anyone does try these fonts, please report back here on
your results.
