I further found on Debian the start up script /etc/init.d/timidity add
-B 2,8 if I did not specify anything in /etc/default/timidity; if I
specify -Oj in /etc/default/timidity then -B 2,8 is not used.

Later try-and-error shows that -Os or -Od have no influence on latency,
it is -B that affects. So the latency problem is solved. The "timidity
stop working after a few dozens of notes" problem is a second one and
seems separate, I'll ask in a separate thread.
