It think it would be much better, not only in terms of efficiency (I would back the events with a single table, not a complex UNION query) but also in terms of flexibility: for some objects it would be possible to publish/unpublish at the demand of the owner.
Also, extending the functionality for new objects (sales orders, expected arrivals of material, expiry dates for production lots... whatever....) would be rather easy: you would have to define the "publish" and "unpublish" methods and select how to compute the events fields.... not too difficult.
