Having converted over 30 modules from 4.x to v5.0 I'm going to post some of my
observations.

Because of the nature and quantity of changes that have been made in V5.0 my
opinion is that it is probably NOT going to be possible to create a fully
automatic set of migration scripts.

About the best I see worth doing is to generate the table conversion scripts.
The reason for this is that there have been a number of view and menu changes.

Where a menu has been removed, where do you want your submenues to go now?
This requires manual inspection and decision.
Where a menu has been moved, do we want our submenues to follow it or put them
somewhere else? This requires manual inspection and decision.
Where a view has been altered, our view overlays no longer function sometimes.
This requires manual inspection and decision.
And there are other situations like this that just require the developer to
examine the code and take a manual decision.

These things are not worth trying to automate.

This is why the ONLY logical choice for migrations to V5.0 is to either do the
manual inspections and changes yourself OR to hire someone to do them for you.

The situation about V5.0 migrations should have been socialized with the
community months ago. It would have given people time to make plans for doing
their own migration project OR would have given them time to budget for the
costs necessary for hiring someone to perform their migration.

Regards,
Gerry
