with the 4.2 series, there are certainly important slowness spots. You could try to work around some of them case by case (analysing RPC requests, databases requests, CPU detailed activity, then putting caches evnetually...) , but yes, we identified that version 4.2.x was hardly scalalable. This was written in our Smile oss ERP's whitepaper at the time of 4.2. As for version 5, luckily A LOT have been done (orm cache + store=true in particular) to avoid such bottlenecks in general (while there might remain a few ones like with large many2many fields not getting paginated). So unfortunately no easy answer for you except that 4.2 is known not to scale very well out of the box.
