as enlightX said, mostly barcode scanner works as an input device, u can open a notepad and scan a barcode and u will see that it will type in the barcode digits. in POS, the system reads the digits and pulls the items on the POS screen, something similar to you would have done manually with keyboard. in openerp POS module, you can click on scan items and start scanning the products. By the way, if your item number is same as barcode than u can straight away scan in the main POS transaction grid (havent tried it but it should work).
