Hello, Anyone using Open ERP in a "white label" packaging or bottling company? I am evaluating Open ERP for using it in the following context:
Company packages citrus juice (orange, grapefruit, lemon, ...) in bottles of different capacities, cartons, jerry-cans, etc. The juice accounts for +-90% of the cost of the finished product and has to be bought (contracted) well in advance (sometimes a year or more) to get a good price. The packaging materials have a very short lead time and have stable prices. The long lead times of the juice makes that the clients place open orders for a volume of juice to be delivered during a year for example. The problem is they order a volume (100000L) of orange juice but the acual product to be delivered can be a "pallet with 50 boxes of 15 PET bottles of 0.5 L orange juice with label 'Carrefour Instant Fresh'" or a "pallet with 45 jerry-cans of 5 L orange juice with label 'Carrefour Caribbean Splash'". The volume of juice to be delivered is a given, the packaging can vary according to the (temporary) needs of the client. The price is defined by the volume of juice with small adjustments for each different packaging. I have to make every combination of packaging, a product in its own right to be able to assign BoMs for production and to track the packaged goods in the warehouse. I have to know how many "pallet with 50 boxes of 15 PET bottles of 0.5 L orange juice with label 'Carrefour Instant Fresh'" I have in stock. On the other hand, when I ship one "pallet with 50 boxes of 15 PET bottles of 0.5 L orange juice with label 'Carrefour Instant Fresh'", I have to know that I shipped (50x15x0.5) = 375 L of orange juice and charge it against (link it to) the order. I think the way of handling packaging in Open ERP might work well in retail but not in manufacturing. One solution could be to add an extra field to Product where it would say if it is the packaging of another product, and how much of it it carries. While I keep frying my brains, I would like the input of people with ideas about this, perhaps pointing me to "the proper way"... Thanks for your attention.
