I had a similar problem using the allinone script 5.0.3 for Ubuntu 8.0.4. In this particular case, openerp is configured within a virtual machine (in my case running Virtual Box).
I found that there was a firewall rule stopping ftp transmissions, this blocking the calendar. Once I removed the firewall, something like sudo ufw disable. It worked pretty well. Using Lightning and a calendar in OpenERP this way worked, well, but I did occasionally get a 'modification failed' on Lightning, which then made the calendar show up as only read only.
