Thanks for the reply.  As root, I did a 
chown openerp /opt/addons/
to no avail.  I also tried 
chmod 777 /opt/addons/

still with no luck.  It does not see the new module as an option.  

By the way, for the installation, I used the script from:

to install on a fresh installation of ubuntu 8.04.3.  

I tried installing via the instructions, but being very unfamiliar with

Use chown -R (for recursive). Each folder needs this right.
