OK, it's working now. I decided to do an unconditional update of all the python libraries then cleared all trace of the previous koo installations. I then copied (I chose to copy as that got me closest to a working client in the previous attempts) over the files from the extracted rpm to the relevant directories and now it works.
There are still some errors being thrown in the logs which I need to look at but the koo client at least seems to be working without problems in the short test I did.
