I believe that adding one more abstraction layer of the employees would complicate things and make OpenERP less usable.
One shorter alternative would be to provide a wizard for "employee replace". That wizard would be responsible of updating all referencing records (such as hierarchy, timesheets, assigned tasks etc), even with a checkbox for every one.
