Glad i didn't miss the clue, bad that it needs customization now.
Same for a company with several e.g. sales offices arround the world. They run 
into this same issue. One would expect to have several defaults per sales 
office like stock locations, order serie numbering, etc, probably linked to the 
user working in a certain sales office. I will create a blueprint for this.

I will go for the report_openoffice solution now. I installed it today and got 
it working with the newly splitted functionality for pdf generation. 
Impressive, but I have to learn report "visual design" things now. :-)

Are there some example reports for e.g. invoice, pickinglist and sales orders 
just to see what I could do with it? I mean with some examples in it for 
template directives, control sections and extra functions? That would really 
help to understand how to use it in practice. (I know the explanation story on
