In my case a database export through the export function in the GTK client of the old system, installation of the latest OpenERP (http://www.openobject.com/forum/topic17584.html) on the new system, then import of the exported database worked perfectly.
Personally, I don't recommend using the outdated OpenERP version in Ubuntu/Synaptic. So, if you have no other reason, install the latest version (http://www.openerp.com/downloads).
