I have run into the same issue using these applications on a Mica2, that the
photo sensor reported inaccurate readings, if not reporting at all.  However,
while using xbows Xsensor* code, which took readings from all the sensors, and
retrieved this data using the xlisten command, the photo sensor worked great.  
 So my assumption is, that the applications that do not report the photo sensor
are coded incorrectly, i have yet to find a solution.  But i would love to find
one myself.  Good luck.
