ANNOUNCEMENT OF POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION
===============================================

The University of Trento, Italy, seeks applications for a position for a
post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Information and Communication
Technology.

The position is part of a large project (5.3 MEUR) funded by the local
government of the Trentino province. The project includes other local research centers, Siemens as industrial partner, as well as several research groups
within the Department.

The goal of the project is to monitor and control road tunnels using wireless sensor networks (WSNs), to improve safety and reduce energy consumption. The project aims at a real deployment in four road tunnels near Trento. As such, the project provides a unique opportunity to investigate the challenges posed by WSN technology in a real environment: the project is partly on developing new research but, given the deployment constraints, a significant emphasis in
placed on what it takes to solve real problems in a real environment.

Specifically, the position's research topic is programming platforms and
routing solutions for WSNs. The researcher is expected to collaborate with the
Distributed Systems group in researching new solutions, as well as to
supervise (and contribute to) the development and migration of research
prototypes into the WSN deployment inside the road tunnels.

The ideal candidate:

- has a solid background in WSNs, particularly on programming platforms,
routing, and communication issues. A Ph.D. thesis and a strong publication
record on these topics are key evaluation criteria.

- has strong system skills, required to face the real-world engineering
problems in the project.

- has good teamwork skills and experience, necessary for coordinating the work
among the many researchers and engineers in the project.

- knowledge of Italian, although welcome, is not strictly required: the
research team is already international, and the technical documents will be
written in English.

Experience with real-life deployments (not necessarily in WSN) is a definite
plus.

Salary is at competitive level depending on experience, and is expected to be in the range of 20,000-30,000 EUR gross/year. There are opportunities for
accommodation provided by the University at special rates.

Trento is a very nice city, consistently ranked at the top in Italy for
quality of life and availability of public services. In the winter, it
provides easy access to a variety of beautiful ski resorts. It is close to the well-known Lago di Garda, as well as to the beautiful cities of Verona and
Venezia.

The project will last 3 years. Shorter appointments are possible, although
not shorter than one year. The position is full-time, starting as soon
as possible.

Applicants should e-mail a curriculum vitae, list of publications, a short
statement of research interest (max. 2 pages) and the names and email
addresses of three professional references to Prof. Gian Pietro Picco
([EMAIL PROTECTED], tel. +39 0461 883953, Department of Information
and Communication Technology, University of Trento,
http://www.dit.unitn.it/~picco). Requests for more information and
clarification are welcome and should be addressed to the same contact.
