as far as I can remember there is a problem with the ftdi driver in
Ubuntu 9.10. Maybe this is the solution of your problem:

Hi,
i have installed tinyos-2.1.1 and have been working on some
examples in docs.tinyos.net <http://docs.tinyos.net> (mote-pc
communication). But i am not receiving any data on my serial port.
The TestSerial app is only sending data but cannot receive any data.
i get the following output:
Sending packet 1
Sending packet 2
Sending packet 3
Sending packet 4
Sending packet 5
Sending packet 6
I think the problem is with javax.comm how can i check whether my java comm api
is correctly installed or how can i install it.
Its the same problem with Basestation app no data being received at all if use
the command java net.tinyos.tool.Listen
