The first release of the TinyOS IDE is now available for download at http://csb109pc1.ucd.ie:8080.
It is completely free to use we only require that the user complete a survey at monthly intervals
regarding the general operation of the IDE and in some cases specifics about the current functionality
The questions will vary from survey to survey and the results of each one will be posted on
the website. Please take the time to answer the questions carefully as they will impact how
the IDE evolves in later releases.
No further enhancements to the functionality will take place in the next month, however as always
bugs will be fixed as we become aware of them so we recommend you use the automatic updater
supplied on the site to stay up to date.
To download the ide (or updater) simply click the link on the website and save the jar to wherever you choose.
Assuming you have java installed double clicking the jar should be all it takes to run.
You can execute java -jar command to run it from the command line if that fails.
If you have any problems with the application try to get the latest version from the website and if that
doesn't fix the problem then don't hesitate in emailing me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]
The IDE will function as follows:
1. Until the middle of every month it will work without interruption
2. Then it will prompt you to complete a survey.
3. Upon completion of the survey you will be emailed a key which will allow you to use it
once again without interruption until the end of the month.
4. If not completed it will revert back to spontaneously quitting after 15 minutes.
5. After the month is up simply run the updater to get that months build and the process starts again.
The survey should not take more than a few minutes of your time to complete and coupled with the
automatic updater we feel that there will be minimal disruption to the users. However, we welcome any
other suggestions people may have in terms of how the application should behave in order to
entice people into completing the survey while not negatively impacting their experience with it.
If users feel that the current policy is too harsh and interrupts their work too often we will consider the possibility
of extending the time after completing the survey to when they must download the next version to a month
or perhaps 6 weeks. The reason why we must ask people to download the new version is because the survey questions
will relate to the new release and so people must have this new version in order to answer the questions properly.
Looking at the survey on www.tinyos.net nearly half the users of TinyOS use windows and this was
the first platform we chose to implement the IDE for. We would welcome any feedback in terms of
how it behaves on various other platforms and if demand is there we will implement platform specific behaviour
for these platforms.
Since this is the first proper release of our system we would ask you to keep updating the IDE as regularly as you
can and hope you enjoy using it.
Richie
