I have a similar setup. XFCE on armel precise. When I open gnome-terminal I also get a blank black screen. I found two things work. 1. Open a new terminal from that terminal 2. (This always works) change your profile settings. The colors etc and when you save them and come back it will have them. For example I choose green on black and it works great.
