I was just telling my students about my freshman year. Classes on T Th and Sat. Finals were after the holidays. We came back for a week of classes, a couple of reading days and then exams for a week. We only had a week off between semesters. That would solve the problem of holidays and exams coinciding. I remember spending my holiday break writing a paper on Paradise Lost while my friends, who had finals before Christmas were partying the entire time.
On a more serious note, we here up in Oswego, NY have a long January break to help reduce heating costs. Closing the dorms down for 6 weeks in the winter does wonders for the budget. That probably doesn't have much of an impact in San Diego. Gary J. WHY in the world can't we have finals before Thanksgiving and have a semester break until righ after New Year's??????
