Don: Your mention of "My Word" brought back some pleasant memories of
the panel's wonderfully humorous (and outrageous, as you said)
definitions of words/terms and their origins. One of our local NPR
stations carried it and then, later, their "My Music" show. There was
yet another one called "In a Minute," on which a panelist had to
improvise for a minute on some topic. If there were hesitations or
repetitions, the audience would jeer in much the same way that the
British parliament does when the PM is addressing its members. The IaM
one I remember almost vividly is the time the person had to talk for one
minute on "being in a frenzy." If the BBC still does those shows, the
NPR stations I can receive don't rebroadcast them. Pity. DKH

Having triggered this discussion by using what I knew to be a cliche, I
have
to congratulate Stephen. His definition reminds me of some of the best
of
the old radio program, My Word, where Frank Muir and other Brits would
make
up the most outrageous explanations and definitions of words and
sayings. I
miss it still. (Muir's autobio is a good read for any who remember, and
gave
me many belly laughs.)
