I am currently teaching APA Publication Style as a one credit stand-alone course. I
am using Szuchman's _Writing With Style: APA Style Made Easy_ as well as the APA
Publication Manual. The class meets for one hour a week. We have been meeting in the
library where the students do the exercises in the Szuchman book. This week we will
be in the classroom practicing doing references. In the second class meeting I
demonstrated how to do a computer search of the literature (PsychInfo) and they had a
week to turn in a minimum of 10 abstracts in an area of interest which will be used in
a lit review due 10/31. They will then learn more about how to write research reports
and write a complete report based on an observational study performed in the research
methods class. So far, I think the class is going better than when it was part of the
research class. The separation into a separate class seems to help keep on task.

Subject: Mastering APA Style

I am interested in learning about the experiences of other instructors who
have
used or are currently using Mastering APA Style (Gelfand, Walker, & the APA,
(2002). I am using this in a self-directed mastery instruction format in my
experimental psychology laboratory (students work on their own and must score
85% or better on a unit exam to achieve mastery). I am discovering that my
students are having more difficulty and are taking longer to achieve the
mastery criterion than I anticipated.

Some students have said that they wish this material were addressed in a
stand-alone course. Has any one tried offering such a course?

Thanks,
Claudia Stanny
