Well, Herb, let's start with restaurants. No cafeterias, fast food, street

female diners.

I have been following this and think that it would be an interesting project for student research. In my experience I know that I tip more than my wife would (and that's why I insist on taking care of the check when we go out) in any given situation. My rules are: 1) in a situation where I'm having a breakfast and the bill is relatively small, I leave a minimum $2 tip if I am alone and $3 if I am with one other person; 2) when eating at a restaurant, I leave approximately 20% of the pre-tax amount (i.e., for food and drink). In the same circumstances my wife would much prefer to leave 10% (in spite of the fact that she waited tables for several years during college (but then again, that was so long ago that 10% may have been the average at that time). I am going to propose that one of our students do a survey of area waitstaff to see what we find out.
