I've never tracked it down, but I remember reading some time ago
that in fact AA was NOT effective, as empirically determined.  I
cannot remember whether this involved a comparison group of some
sort, or simply statistics on the failure rate of people joining
AA (which would be weaker evidence for non-efficacy).
