Michael, you asked a great question.

Wish I knew.

My guess would be more believers become atheists, but one reason I say
that is due to the experience of children who grow up and no longer
believe.

I'm sure most kids are taught to believe in God and do so without much
questioning, and then certainly a percentage of them discard this belief
as they get older.

If very few kids are NOT taught to believe in God and DO NOT, I wonder
what percentage of THAT group changes theological positions.

If we just looked at post-childhood/adolescence, I wonder what we'd find.
