Here's another hypothesis to add to Doug's: Psychologists, the contrary (and possibly psychologically reactant) lot that we are, are more likely to send a response to TIPS if we didn't say red hammer (I, for example, said blue hammer) than if we did while the average person is more likely to forward the message on to all their friends and neighbors if they did think of a red hammer.
