I've actually showed it to my class (and my wife) and all but two
noticed the change (one was me, the first time I saw it!) Granted, my
class is small (7 students). Nonetheless, I wonder why! I thought maye
because I use Powerpoint on a screen, which makes the picture larger.
But my wife only saw it on the laptop screen (small) and still noticed.

Another possible factor is sex. All my students (and my wife) are
female. Hum... not sure I like THAT explanation...

I'd be curious to use a larger group and see what happens. Let me know
if somebody does it...

Cheers!

Interesting Internet resource and piloting results, Jean-Marc. =)

I wonder how Field Dependence and Field Independence might modulate this phenomenon (does anyone have access to the Embedded Figures test?). Could the pattern mask draw the field dependent person's processing resources away from the rotation of the intermittent desk 'element'?  . . . and I wonder how the researchers operationalize the "dissociation" of perceptual and memory phenomena. Does anyone have the full paper on hand?
