Jim raises an interesting point regarding faculty evaluations.  I served
on a teaching evaluation committee that recommended that written
comments (as opposed to 5-point scaled replies) be returned to the
faculty member for feedback, but not go to chairs, deans, etc.,
precisely because the responses are polarized and not representative of
class sentiments.  And, although our provost was very supportive in
implementing other committee recommendations, he disagreed with this
point.  If anyone is interested, our recommendations are available at:
http://www.uca.edu/divisions/academic/idc/report_of_the_teaching_evaluatio.htm

Jim Guinee says:

It will take a little bit to digest this report, but it is well worth reading,
and you and the committee deserve appreciation for the effort and thought
that went into it.

Thanks for sharing it.
