I am still reading some of R. Hake's "references" and exploring others. I think the issues are important and there are many politicized viewpoints out there. Richard's thinking and work in this area is admirable, but the rhetoric and lack of integrative voices insures chaos. Some of the discussion on assessment resembles children arguing in their sandbox. At times you just want a responsible adult to come along a help the kids play more cooperatively and constructively. I would like to see simple routes to basic empirical studies. I have no problem with pre-post methods (if subjects remain equivalent), independent assessment of content (declarative) and longitudinal assessment of conceptual understanding with convergent measures.
