The poster was presented at the EPA in Boston in 1995, and was entitled "The
influence of makeup examinations and class size on test scores, quiz scores
and attendance"

The presenter was Irwin Kahn, from Ferris State University.

Here's the description:

"Little research exists on makeup examinations. This study investigated the
relationship between makeup examinations and class size. Results indicated
the following: (a) Students who did not take makeups had higher test
scores, quiz scores, and better attendance than those who took makeups, (b)
students in smaller classes had higher quiz scores but not higher test
scores or better attendance than those in larger classes, and (c), students
in smaller classes missed fewer examinations than those in larger classes."

So my memory failed me regarding the variable of class size, but I think the
findings are still pertinent to the issue of makeups vs. no makeups, and may
be helpful to Chris. In reading the description, it's a little unclear how
class size had an effect on makeup tests anyhow. My memory is of the
finding of "a." A google search indicates Irwin Kahn is now retired and
living in Chapel Hill, NC.

It was he who said that he gives all makeup tests on the last day of class.
I've done that ever since my discussion with him and it's worked well for
me. I give them after the final exam. Those who don't need to take a
makeup can leave after they finish the exam. And my findings agree with
Kahn's: Those who don't take makeups do better overall.
