A few weeks ago, someone on this list asked why religion is so strong a
social force in the US while it has little hold over the populations of
other developed countries. At the time, I mentioned that there had been
analyses claiming that because the US had no state religion,
denominations there had to compete far more fiercely to survive, and
have consequently become much more efficient at drawing and holding members.
I just found a most interesting (free) lecture on this topic on
University Channel Podcast (on iTunes). It is entitled "The Market
Approach to Understanding Religion" and was delivered by the noted
sociologist Rodney Stark at Vanderbilt U. on 14 Feb. 2006. It runs about
an hour (but there is an additional 17 minutes of introductions before
the lecture actually starts).
