Thanks Don:

This is an interesting abstract and I'll look for the study but it's certainly
from a backwards perspective: asking faculty which characteristics they find
desirable in students is not quite the same as assessment of how 'good' a
teacher is based relatively on being housed with in a teaching versus a
research focused institution.

I think it would be very hard to do such a study because of the necessarily
limited operational definition that a single study could use for how good a
teacher, a teacher is.

It certainly seems to be an area that is lacking data; maybe some fresh young
junior faculty person on tips would be interested in pursuing such a study!

Abstract: Presents results of a survey of 218 professors at the
University of South Carolina (SC) and Georgia State University (GSU)
concerning student behaviors. Responses to a 57-statement
questionnaire on which student behaviors were ranked from very
undesirable to very desirable indicated considerable agreement between
the faculties at each university. It is suggested that those at the
teaching-oriented institution (GSU) valued more highly behavior that
was related to coursework and classroom activities, while those at the
research-oriented institution (SC) valued more highly obsequiousness
and noncourse-related behavior. (12 ref) (PsycINFO Database
