There has been a distinction in the literature between Obedience to Authority (Milgram) and Conformity (Asch). I always thought the SPE was supposed to be Conformity but now it seems more like Obedience to Authority. Certainly the authority is part of the situation but the impact of the authority is not the same as the supposed power of the situation itself to draw out deindividuated behaviors. The Zimbardo study wouldn't have near as much impact if it was known that the guards were given suggestions for how to play their roles. It could, of course, be good evidence of Obedience to Authority but that isn't how it has been labeled.
