Tipsters:
The Department of Psychology at the University of the Free State,
Bloemfontein, South Africa will be hosting the first "Teaching of
Psychology in South Africa Conference" on 22-23 March 2007.
One of the primary aims of the conference is to provide a platform to
stimulate debate on the issue of a unique indigeneous psychology vs a
globalised universal psychology. As many Tipsters are aware, "winds of
change" are blowing over international psychology. The proponents of the
indigeneous psychology movement base their arguments on the fact that by
far the majority of international tertiary institutions (including those
in South Africa) make use of foreign text books and training material to
teach their students. The result is that the course content is
frequently irrelevant to their context and is even riddled with myths
and misconceptions.
On the other hand, supporters of the globalised psychology concept
argue in favour of the universal principles that cannot be ignored and
should therefore be part of the teaching of psychology worldwide.
This "splintering" of psychology could easily weaken our science in
several ways. I personally believe that a significant part of the
solution lies in the merging of the two viewpoints. This implies that we
should all move out of our comfort zones by collaborating with
international colleagues.
Against this background, we would like to invite our international
colleagues to the abovementioned conference. Hopefully they will not
only obtain insight in the problems/challenges that other countries
experience in the teaching of psychology, but will also be able to make
valuable contributions to the debate. I should mention that the
well-known Dave Myers has already accepted an invitation to be a keynote
speaker.
Tipsters who are interested in attending and even presenting are more
than welcome to get in touch with me.
Best regards
Dap Louw
