Thanks to those who responded with ideas for fostering group interaction with the online format. Summarized here are some of the suggestions:

1. Blaine Peden suggested using a Wiki which allows students to easily work on a group document without a lot of uploading/downloading/saving activity. (I'm checking to see if my LMS's, Angel and Moodle, have a similar sort of "public space" already built in.) [WIKI sites:  www.pbwiki.com  www.wetpaint.com   www.wikispaces.com  ]
