These discussions always remind me of Hand Eysenck's published comment on the 
old Smith & Glass meta-analysis. It was titled, "Meta-Analysis or 
Meta-Silliness." The basic thesis was  that you can't make a make a large pile 
of little cow patties and end up with a sweet-smelling rose. You still have a 
big, stinking pile of cow patties.
