Chris: While Asch was distressed at the levels of conformity he found in his research, I've come to realize that the capacity and tendency to adopt the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of others is remarkably adaptive, and does much more good than harm. I use such demonstrations of the down side of conformity to get students to think about all the good aspects of conformity.
