Living in an agricultural state, I can attest to the value of research on the
control of an agricultural pest such as the fruit fly.
Several years ago, a serious infestation of the Medditeranean fruit fly posed a
significant threat to the citrus industry in Florida and California.

The genetic research based on fruit flies is also important. I have a friend in
biology who does fruit fly research in order to understand the genetic
mechanisms of Alzheimer's disease. She teaches a genetics course in which
students do projects on the various public health issues (there are several
genetically-linked human diseases in human that are studied in fruit fly models
- the list eludes me now).
